PURPOSE: To provide a back light which efficiently takes light source light out of the front surface of a light transmission plate, is of a thin type not produced heretofore and has high luminance. CONSTITUTION: This surface light source includes the flat planar transparent light transmission plate 1, a light source 2 on which light is made incident from at least its one end face, a reflection mirror 3 which condenses the light emitted from the light source 2 to the end face of the light transmission plate and a reflection sheet 5 which covers the base side of the light transmission plate 1. A scattering transparent film layer 8 having a structure which is distributed with plural pieces of fine circular recessed parts 7 in a planar form is formed on the front surface 1b of the light transmission plate 1 which is a light exit surface.
