PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound presenting virtually no chemical injuries no paddy rice, presenting, in contrast, excellent herbicidal activity at low doses on Echinochloa oryzicola, a kind of persistent paddy weed, thus useful as a herbicide, esp. for applying to paddy fields. CONSTITUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I [R is a (halogen- substituted) 1-6C alkyl; R is H, a (1-6C alkylthio-substituted) 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, etc.; R is a 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxyl or halogen; R is H or a 1-6C alkyl; R is a 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxyl, phenoxy, etc.; A is C≡C or a group of formula CR =CH (R is H, a 1-6C alkyl or halogen); n is 0-4; m is 0-5], e.g. O-phenylpropargyl-4-acetamidophenol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III (X is an eliminable group) to form a compound of formula IV which is, if needed, reacted with a compound of formula R X (X is the same as X ; R is the same as R except H).
