Summary:PURPOSE: To provide a rotary kiln type heat treatment apparatus preventing the flocculation and aggregation of the waste or residue in a cylindrical body to enable continuous operation. CONSTITUTION: In an apparatus subjecting waste to heat treatment using a rotary kiln 1, the rotary kiln 1 is constituted so that hard timbling elements 6 are arranged in a cylindrical body and a weir or barrier plate 7 obstructing the flow down of the tembling elements 6 is provided in the cylindrical body at one place or more to demarcate the cylindrical body and the one or more tumbling element 6 is housed in each of the demarcated regions or sharp projections are arranged to the inner wall of the cylindrical body over the entire periphery of at least one cross-sectional surface of the cylindrical body.
