Summary:PURPOSE: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing the subject compound by which the subject compound useful as an intermediate for producing a plant disease injury controlling agent can be produced in good yield. CONSTITUTION: Acetone is reacted with a lower alkyl cyanoacetate in the presence of a catalyst in n-hexane as a main solvent (with >=50wt.% content) to produce a lower alkyl 2-cyano-3-methyl-2-butenoate. Aniline which may be substituted, e.g. aminophenol, toluidine or a carboxylic acid (e.g. a lower fatty acid or benzoic acid) is used as the catalyst. The amount thereof used is within the range of 0.001-0.1mol in the case of the aniline and 0.01-0.2mol in the case of the carboxylic acid based on 1mol lower alkyl cyanoacetate.
