Summary:PURPOSE: To form a flawless hydrous chromium oxide layer at the time of electrodepositing a hydrous chromium oxide layer on a tin-free plated steel strip in a plating soln. by changing the direction of a raw steel strip with a non-contact direction changing floater. CONSTITUTION: A steel strip 1 with the surface plated with Cr is lowered into a plating soln. 5 through a conductor roll 2, passed between opposed electrodes 4, turned upward by a circular floater 7, passed between opposed electrodes 4 and supplied with a current to electrodeposit a hydrous chromium oxide layer on the surface. In this case, the plating soln. is injected from a nozzle 8 provided on the circular surface of the floater 7 opposed to the strip, many protrusions 9 are furnished on the floater 7 surface to suppress the flow velocity of the plating soln. entrained by the traveling strip and to generate a static pressure between the strip 1 and floater 7, hence the strip 1 is turned upward through an angle of 180 deg. without contact with the floater 7, and a good-quality hydrous chromium oxide layer free of the flaw due to contact with the floater.
