Summary: | PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals and medicines in high purity and in a high yield by hydrolyzing dichloromethylbenzoyl chloride or pentachloroxylene in the presence of a catalyst in a sulforane solvent. CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I or formula II (the substitution positions of the substituents CHCl2 and CHO are ortho, meta or para) is hydrolyzed in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. zinc oxide) in a sulforane solvent at 100-170 deg.C to obtain the formyl benzoic acid of formula III. The employment of the sulforane as the solvent enables to prevent the lowering of a reactor efficiency, reduce the amount of the solvent and eliminate the progress of side reactions. The catalyst and the solvent are used in amounts of 0.01-1.0wt.% and 0.1-10 times weight, respectively, on the basis of the weight of the starting substance. |
