Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a monomer for producing plastics, a plastic modifying agent, etc., using a readily handleable substance at a low cost without any danger of explosion, etc., by reacting a specific cyclic ketone with a perborate. CONSTITUTION: (A) 2,2-Bis(4-oxocyclohexyl)propane of formula I is reacted with (C) an oxidizing agent comprising a perborate (e.g. sodium perborate tetrahydrate and/or anhydride) in an equiv. amount of 1-5 times (preferably 1-3 times) that of the component (A) in (B) a fatty acid solvent such as formic acid or trifluoroacetic acid in an amount of preferably 3-50 times that of the component (A) to afford 5,5'-(1-methylethylidene)bis-2-oxepanone of formula II. The reaction is usually carried out in a solution or a slurry state at 0-l00 deg.C for 5min to 20hr and treatments such as distilling away of the solvent, extraction or reprecipitation, as necessary, are performed after the reaction.
