PURPOSE: To improve the reliability of wire severance preventing technique and also machining speed. CONSTITUTION: A power control device for a wire electric discharge machine is provided with an electric discharge pulse detecting part 12 for detecting a short-circuit state between a workpiece 2 and a wire electrode 1, an abnormal state detecting part 13 for discriminating an abnormal state from the detection result of the electric discharge pulse detecting part 12, and an energy control part 14 for adding the energy value of electric discharge pulses within the specified time and stopping the supply of pulse voltage so that the added result of the energy value does not exceed the specified energy value during a period of abnormality being discriminated by the abnormal state detecting part 13.
