Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent unstable recording, reproducing and erasing by detecting deterioration of a semiconductor laser of an optical head before recording information on an-optical disk. CONSTITUTION:The optical disk device is provided with a checking reflecting surface for reflecting irradiating light from the optical head 3 at a constant rate in a movable range of the optical head 3 by a moving means. This optical head 3 is moved by the moving means into a checking range for irradiating the checking reflecting surface with the light, and the light is projected from the optical head 3 to read out intensity of its reflected light from the checking reflecting surface, so as to compare it with a preset reference value, and if the intensity of the reflected light is lower than the reference value, it is decided that the semiconductor laser is deteriorated in performance, and informed.
