Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a herbicide composition for paddy fields, containing a 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole derivative as an active ingredient, not giving a chemical damage to rice, and capable of expressing sufficiently satisfactory herbicidal effects against various important paddy field weeds at a low dose. CONSTITUTION:A herbicide composition for paddy fields contains a 4- phenyl-1,2,4-triazole derivative of the formula [R , R are H, halogen; R is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy; R and R may form -OCH2CH2O-, -CH2CH2 CH2O-, -C(=O)C(CH3)2O-, CH$2C(CH3)2O-] as an active ingredient. The herbicide composition is especially preferably used as a herbicide in submerged soil- treating methods for paddy fields. The herbicide is entirely noninjurious for rice, and can selectively kill Echinochloa crus-galli L., Lindernia procumbens, Rotala indica, Cyperus clifformis L., Scirpus Juncoides, Monochoria vaginalis, etc.
