Summary:PURPOSE:To reduce a specific resistance on the surface of a magnetic layer, while realizing high dispersibility in the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:In a coating type magnetic recording medium, the cobalt- modified magnetic iron oxide is used as the magnetic powder which is a structural material of a magnetic layer and the surface of such cobalt-modified magnetic iron oxide is covered with at least a kind of molybdic acid, tungustic acid and stannic acid. Moreover, as the binding agent, a binder including polarity group is used. Thereby, a magnetic recording medium having good dropout characteristic and running characteristic can be obtained.
