Summary:PURPOSE:To speedily activate a catalyst and secure the best invert ratio by determining a stopping timing of secondary air supply according to an afterburning rate due to the secondary air supply. CONSTITUTION:A heat generation rate G is obtained from a fuel injection amount and an ignition timing (P5). Heat capacity Y in an exhaust passage is determined based on a cooling water temperature at the starting time. An exhaust temperature TEX of a secondary air supplying position is estimated (P6), and an afterburning rate I is estimated (P7). A catalyst temperature TCTFI at the termination of secondary air supplying is determined according to the afterburning rate I (P8). When the exhaust temperature TEX is that value or more, the secondary air supplying is stopped (P9, P10).
