Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent a normal operation from being detected as an erroneous one by a method wherein set timing for a specific period is changed according to a specific speed owing to a specific means by using a scanning error-detecting means. CONSTITUTION:A beam detecting signal being a detection signal detected from a beam detector 55, after its waveform is shaped with a waveform shaping circuit 91, is outputted as the BD signal, and used for synchronization in a main scan direction. The BD signal is inputted also to a BD error-detecting circuit 92, and the BD error-detecting circuit 92 monitors whether the BD signal is outputted at a normal timing or not. When not outputted at a normal timing, the BD error signal is outputted to a PCPU 66. When an output dot density is varied, a scanning speed of optical beams is changed, and the output timing of the BD signal is also changed. The PCPU 66 adds a data corresponding to the output dot density to the BD error detecting circuit 92.
