Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the light transmission characteristic of a macromolecule- liquid crystal combined film, to impart steepness to the light transmission characteristic and to lower the driving voltage by previously coating the surface of a substrate with transparent electrodes on the side where the macromolecule- liquid crystal combined film is to be formed, with an undercoat film subjecting the undercoat film to a rubbing treatment. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the substrate 4 with the transparent electrodes on the side where the high polymer-liquid crystal combined film is to be formed, is previously coated with the undercoat film 5 prior to the formation of the macromolecule-liquid crystal combined film and after the undercoat film 5 is subjected to the rubbing treatment, the macromolecule-liquid crystal combined film is formed thereon. A pretilt angle is previously imparted to the liquid crystals in the macromolecule-liquid crystal combined film by subjecting the undercoat film 5 to the rubbing treatment, there by the steepness is imparted to the light transmission characteristic of the high polymer-liquid combined film even when the high-frequency electric field to be impressed to the high polymer-liquid crystal combined film is off, and the driving voltage is thus lowered.
