Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing 2-(substituted phenyl)-2propen-1-ol useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines and agrichemicals in high selectivity. CONSTITUTION:A halogenated benzene derivative of formula I (R is H, a lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; X is a halogen) is made to react with magnesium in tetrahydrofuran at 20-80'C, preferably 60-70 deg.C to afford a Grignard reagent of formula II. Then, the compound of formula II is diluted in an inert solvent and then, the diluted compound is made to react with propagyl alcohol in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper compound at 0-100 deg.C, preferably 60-80 deg.C to afford the objective compound of formula III. The copper compound is used in an amount of 0.01-0.1 times by mol based on the compound of formula I and the propagyl alcohol is used in an amount of 0.4-1.0 times by mol based on the compoud of formula I.
