PURPOSE:To provide a self-traveling vehicle which can ascend and descend the stairs without receiving impact suddenly and a stairs ascending and descending method by the self-traveling vehicle. CONSTITUTION:A pair of left and right crawlers 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B are arranged in front and in rear, and the respective crawlers 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B are constituted so as to swing freely in a vertical plane. The respective crawlers 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B are made to ascend and descend the stairs without receiving large impact while swinging them so as to run along the plane parts 10A and 10B or the top parts of the stairs 42. Thereby, damage of a self-traveling vehicle 1 itself can be prevented, and when a cargo is loaded on the self-traveling vehicle 1, damage of the cargo can be also prevented.
