Summary:PURPOSE:To detect a widthwise shape of a steel strip by irradiating the surface of the steel strip having a gloss and running at a high speed with the leaser beam, and by picking up a reflected image of the laser beam. CONSTITUTION:A plurality laser reflecting mirrors 6 are spirally arranged at predetermined intervals on a rotary shaft 5 laid widthwise of a steel strip 1, so as to constitute a laser distributing device 4. A laser beam 3 is emitted from a laser source in parallel with the rotary shaft 5, and accordingly, it is reflected by the mirrors 6 so as to form, on the steel strip 1, spots which are picked up. As a result, a warp widthwise of the steel strip is detected. Accordingly, the laser spots can be distributed crosswise to the steel strip at a high rate without lowering the power density thereof, and accordingly, the diffused reflected light from the spots can be picked up even though the steel strip is glossy, thereby it is possible to precisely detect the widthwise shape of the steel strip.
