Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a flat panel discharge lamp equipped with a stable light emitting characteristic by inserting the base ends of main electrodes introduced into a flat vessel and securing to it, putting their foremost extremities in contact with the slope of a spacing control part, and thereby suppressing deflections of the main electrodes as approaching. CONSTITUTION:A vessel 2 with a flat section is formed by providing glass stems 21, 22 at the opening of a bulb 20 whose inner surface is coated with phosphor, and an inert gas such as argon is encapsulated in this vessel 2. A pair of main electrodes 3, 4 are installed in the vessel 2, and a getter plate 5 is fixed to one of the main electrodes 4, and an emitter 6 is applied to a dint, 211 provided in the stem 21. In this flat panel discharge lamp, the main electrodes 3, 4 are introduced into the vessel 2 and arranged parallel as confronting the opposing inner surfaces, and their base ends are inserted into the stem 21 and fixed. The foremost extremities of the main electrodes 3, 4 are extended across the flat space toward the opposing inner surfaces of the stem 22 and put in contact with a spacing control part 221. The part 221 is equipped with a slope 221A so that deflections of the electrodes 3, 4 in the approaching direction are suppressed.
