Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a new 3-lauroylgallic acid and its derivative having antibacterial action and antioxidation action, useful as a natural antibacterial and/or antioxidation preservative for cosmetic, detergent, edible oil and fat, engine oil, etc., and having high safety. CONSTITUTION:This 3-lauroylgallic acid and its derivative are expressed by formula I and formula II (R is an alkyl). The 3-lauroylgallic acid and its derivative can be produced by drying the rhizome of Satakentia liukiuensis, extracting with a solvent (preferably ethanol or ethyl acetate) and extracting acidic substances from the extract with an alkaline solvent (preferably an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, etc.). An antibacterial agent and/or an antioxidation agent can be produced by using at least one of the compound or the derivative as an active substance.
