Summary:PURPOSE:To make the scale of a circuit small and to simplify the circuit by calculating a branch metric based on the control signal selected in a branch metric calculation control section so as to give the calculated branch metric to an ACS section not via a selection means. CONSTITUTION:A control circuit 4 selects path data to be outputted and when the output sequence is decided, the path data are read from a ROM 3 and the data are outputted to branch metric (BM) calculation devices 10-40 as control signals Ds1-Ds4. The calculation device 10 applies BM calculation to the input data D1 based on path data being the signal Ds1. A BM calculation circuit 11 applies BM calculation to the data D1 and the signal Ds1. The signal Ds1 given to a BM calculation circuit 12 is given to an inverter 13, from which an inverted control signal Ds1 is outputted and the signal and the data D1 are used for BM calculation and a BMb is outputted. The other calculation devices 20-40 conduct similar calculation to provide outputs of BM values BMc-BMh. ASC circuits 66-69 use the BM values BMa-BMh to provide the output of a regular BM and a path selection signal.
