Summary:PURPOSE:To extend the life of an electrode even when the electrode is used as an anode and a cathode by reversing polarity, to increase residual chlorine when the electrode is used as the anode and to stably keep water sanitary over a long time or to form strong acidic ion water. CONSTITUTION:An electrode is obtained by providing a coating layer of platinum metal, iridium oxide and tantalum oxide containing 1-50mol% of platinum, 40-80mol% of iridium and 10-50mol% of tantalum in terms of metal on a conductive substrate. Electrolysis is performed using this electrode to generate chlorine to keep tap water sanitary or to form strong acidic ion water.
