Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a stable picture quality by process control. CONSTITUTION:When picture data is quantized, the error generated at the time of quantizing the density level of a noticed picture element is distributed to peripheral picture elements, and the residual between the total sum of the distributed level and the error is distributed to picture elements, which are selected by using random numbers, to eliminate the occurrence of a specific pattern. The output width and the intensity of laser light of a semiconductor laser 70 are set in accordance with each gradation of quantized picture data to perform the image forming operation. When the number of copies exceeds 2000, the output width and the intensity or maser light are changed in accordance with reference values with respect to each gradation, and the picture density is corrected to stabilize the picture quality.
