Summary:PURPOSE:To attain stable switching by arranging a direction of spontaneous polarization in the direction of a one side oriented film in the whole area in a cell and superimposing a specific voltage calculated from the voltage bringing about the switching on a drive pulse voltage when the magnitude of the impressed voltage is changed. CONSTITUTION:The direction of the spontaneous polarization of a liquid crystal composition is arranged in the direction of the one side oriented film in the whole area between transparent electrode substrates, and an oriented state of a liquid crystal molecule is changed by continuously changing the magnitude of the voltage impressed to a liquid crystal display element from a (+) side to a (-) side and from the (-) side to the (+) side. Further, when the voltage when the oriented state is changed for the voltage change from the (+) side to the (-) side is defined as V1, and the voltage when the oriented state is changed for the voltage change from the (-) side to the (+) side is defined as V2, a bi-polarity pulse voltage superimposed with a DC voltage with the magnitude of 0.7-1.3 times of the voltage calculated by (V1+V2)/2 and the same polarity is impressed to drive. Its waveform is a DC voltage component superimposed on the pulse voltage, that is, a bi-stabilized voltage VBS, and cancels an internal voltage.
