Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing a fiber-type diffraction grating capable of increasing the reflectance to the light component of a specified wavelength and to provide a diffraction grating forming fiber. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 10 is set in a furnace core tube 20, gaseous hydrogen (H2) is introduced from a valve 21 side toward a valve 22, and the tube 20 is kept at a high temp. or pressure. The optical fiber 10 is an ordinary quartz optical fiber contg. germanium oxide (GeO2) in the core part. The fiber 10 is preferably kept at 200-1300 deg.C and 20-300atm, and the hydrogen content of the core of the optical fiber 10 is preferably controlled to >=500ppm. A large change in refractive index is caused in the region irradiated with UV by the reduction of the waveguide and the addition of hydrogen to the core part.
