Summary:PURPOSE:To easily indicate a position on a large screen by irradiating the screen with visible light, photodetecting light transmitted through the screen and a position information layer by a photodetecting means, and discriminating the position on the screen by a discriminating means. CONSTITUTION:The position information layer 21 is formed by printing a bar code which has universal directivity on the back surface of, for example, the screen 13 by using light-shielding ink. An image is projected by a projector 12 on the screen 13 and an operator points an optional position on the screen by using an indication device 14. The majority of the light from the projector 12 is cut off by the screen 13 and laser light is transmitted through the screen 13 to reach a photodetecting element 23. The light is converted by the photodetecting element 23 into an electric signal, which is converted by an A/D converter into a digital signal to generate positional information that the bar code has, and, the positional information is converted into logical data corresponding to X-Y coordinates on the display surface by a decoder. A host computer 11 compares the data with positional information previously sent out to the projector 12 to know the current indicated position.
