Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a refrigerant amount detector for a refrigerating machine or an air conditioner, by which an accurate leakage or the charge degree of refrigerant can be known. CONSTITUTION:A scattered light intensity detector 100 detects the intensity of scattered light in refrigerant at a condensed-liquefied refrigerant path 90, and the uniqueness of operating state of a refrigerating machine or an air conditioner is judged, using a temperature characteristic detector 310, a compressor rotation speed detector 600, a temperature characteristic device 320 and others. The amount of refrigerant is calculated from the functional relation between the results of judgment and the charge ratio of refrigerant stored in a characteristic memory 700 by a refrigerant amount arithmetic device 700, and the results of calculation are indicated on the indicator 810.
