Summary:PURPOSE:To provide an image forming device and a cleaning device for an image carrier which prevent image quality deterioration, such as color mixture caused by residual toner, without making the entire device large and by which an image of satisfactory image quality can be obtained. CONSTITUTION:A prescribed image pattern, which is not transferred to transfer paper, is written by a laser beam generator 3. Out of developing devices situated downstream from the cleaning device 7 in the direction of the rotation of the image carrier 1, the furthest upstream black developing device 4a develops the untrasfer image pattern. A cleaning blade 12 in the cleaning device 7 retracts immediately after clearing away the toner image of the untrasfer image pattern. Thus, even in the case where the residual toner, when the cleaning blade 12 retracts, is mixed into the developing device 4a passing through the opposite position first by the rotation of the image carrier 1, color mixture, etc., are prevented, so that a satisfactry image can be obtained.
