Summary:PURPOSE:To make occupants feel as little discomfort as possible in defrosting an outside heat exchanger while occupants are in a vehicle by reducing the number of times of defrosting when occupants are in the vehicle. CONSTITUTION:When frosting is detected with a key switch being on, a first defrosting method is employed whereby cold air is not blown into a vehicle, with a refrigerating cycle 31 converted to an air-conditioning cycle and an indoor blower 4 turned off. The first defrosting method provides little defrosting power but does not pose such nonconformity that cold air is blown toward occupants, making them feel discomfort. When a battery is charged after the unit is operated for heating, the refrigerating cycle 34 is converted to the air- conditioning cycle and the indoor blower 4 is turned on. Since no occupant is in the vehicle while the battery is charged, there is no possibility of making occupants feel discomfort even if cold air is blown into the vehicle; also, a second defrosting method whereby cold air is blown into the vehicle is employed, so an outside heat exchanger 33 can be defrosted efficiently. This efficient defrosting while charging the battery reduces the number of times of defrosting when occupants are in the vehicle.
