Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently purify exhaust gas taking account of the variation due to temperature in the NOx absorbing capacity of a NOx absorbent. CONSTITUTION:NOx absorbent units 5a are connected in parallel in the exhaust passage 3 of an internal combustion engine 1, and the exhaust gas is alternately changed over by respective exhaust changeover valves 2, 22, so that the NOx absorbent units 5a are alternately reproduced. The exhaust temperatures passing through the NOx absorbent units are detected by exhaust temperature sensors 7a, 7b, and an engine control unit (ECU) 20 calculates an optimum absorbing time based on the variation due to temperature in the NOx absorbing capacity of the NOx absorbent, and changes over the respective exhaust changeover valves in accordance with the calculated absorbing time.
