Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a sheet feeding device in which separation performance can be automatically regulated independently of the kind, condition, and service environment of the sheet by providing a first energizing means for energizing a friction means to a rotary feeding means and a second energizing means for energizing the friction means in the reverse direction to the sheet feeding means. CONSTITUTION:In such a condition that a sheet S is inserted and the foremost end thereof does not reach a separation part, a friction plate 2 moves downstream as a separation roller 1 rotates. At that time, a spring 4 is extended and a tension is caused in the friction plate 2. At the same time, a guide member 5 is pushed up to contract a spring 3, and the pressing force N of the friction plate 2 is increased to heighten the sheet feeding force of the separation roller 1. When a second sheet S2 reaches the separation part, the second sheet S2 is drawn back upstream due to the difference in the magnitude between the pressing force N and the tension F. When the friction plate 2 is drawn back, the pressing force N decreases, and the load to be added to the first sheet S1 decreases.
