Summary:PURPOSE:To widen the adaptive range for the changes of illuminance and to obtain optinum picture quality according to the state of an object. CONSTITUTION:A clock pulse PHI3f having three times as many frequencies as a clock pulse PHIf which coincides with the one-field period of a TV signal mode is generated from a clock pulse generator 1 and a solid-state image pickup element 3 is driven at high speed with the clock pulse PHI3f by a driving means 2. After a signal processing is performed for the output of the solid-state image pickup element 3, the image signals corresponding to three continuous screens are stored in field memories 11 to 13 or 14 to 16 for every screen. The image signals of the field memories 11 to 16 are read by the clock pulse PHIf, and are inputted in an adder 8 via output selection switches SW1 to 3, and the selected and added image signals become output image signals. At this time, a selection output control means 6 controls the output selection switches SW 1 to 3 according to the state of an object based on an external mode switch signal 1.
