Summary:PURPOSE:To approach the size of an electric circuit element to the ultrafine size of a molecular level by using an oxidizing/reducing substance as the component material of the element. CONSTITUTION:A first oxidizing/reducing substance film 3, a second oxidizing/ reducing substance film 4 and electrodes 2a-2c formed of a third oxidizing/ reducing film 5 connected electrically to the films 3-5 or connected to apply an electric influence are provided. One of the films 3-5 is of a protein film, one of the other two is of an LB film or a chemically modified film, and the remaining one film is of a protein film, an LB film or a chemically modified film. Transistor characteristics or switching characteristics are generated by utilizing the difference of redox potential of the oxide reducing substances. Thus, a switch element which can perform the similar operation to a conventional semiconductor switch element (P-N-P junction type) can be realized as an element of ultrafine size of molecular level.
