Summary:PURPOSE:To reduce the number of parts and the space of an optical system by placing an optical element, which separates a return light beam, near a beam splitter. CONSTITUTION:A return beam Lr, which is reflected by a recording medium 2, is separated from a light beam L from a light source 1 by a beam splitter 13. The separated return light beam Lr is separated into three luminous fluxes, for example, at an optical element 14. The three luminous fluxes are converted to respective electrical signals by a detection means 4. Prescribed computations are performed to the output of the means 4 by an operating circuit 26. Since the beam splitter 13 and the optical element 14 are placed close to each other or are contacted to each other, the light beam L and the return light beam Lr are not affected by air and are directly made incident to the element 14. Thus, the compensation device, which is normally needed to supress the variations in the optical quantity caused by temperature changes, is simplified.
