Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the light utilization rate of a spatial optical modulation element constituted by using a perpendicularly oriented liquid crystal having an electric field control type double refractive effect. CONSTITUTION:The spatial optical modulation element SLM constituted by including an optical modulation material layer member consisting of the perpendicularly oriented liquid crystal having the electric field control type double refractive effect and a photoconductive layer member between two electrodes is mounted to a supporting member 6 having a mounting surface for the spatial optical modulation element turnable within the prescribed plane. A means for controlling the turning of the supporting member 6 so as to maximize a detected output by detecting the intensity of the reading-out light from the predetermined part of the spatial optical modulation element SLM is provided. As a result, the setting of the direction of the plane of polarization of incident light and the direction of the major axis of the liquid crystal at a prescribed angle is extremely easy and the spatial optical modulation element SLM is put into the state that the element can be operated with good efficiency. The need for making readjustment by a change in environmental temp. is eliminated.
