Summary:PURPOSE:To provide an animation image predictive coding/decoding method which never varies the image quality in both fade-in and fade-out states. CONSTITUTION:A movement compensating circuit 2 detects the displacement of the input image data a1 being present on an input image memory 1 as a movement vector against a decoded image memory 3. Then the predictive image data c1 is calculated based on the detected movement vector and the predictive reference image data b1. A fade correcting circuit 4 applies the correction of fade to the data e1 based on the information stored in a fade information memory 5. Then the difference between the corrected data e1 and the data a1 is calculated by a subtractor 6 and then inputted to a coding circuit 7 as the difference data d1. The difference image data g1 coded by the circuit 7 are inputted to a decoding circuit 31, and the decoded image data p1 are stored in a decoded image memory 32. The output h1 of the memory 32 is identical with the decoded data and applied to a movement compensated circuit 33.
