Summary:PURPOSE:To remove sufficiently not only remaining chlorine but also org. halogen compd. such as agricultural chemicals, and trihalomethane and the odor of mildew by using at least a reducing substance and an activated carbon as filter mediums and cleaning water by passing the water at first through a reducing substance layer and then through an activated carbon layer. CONSTITUTION:In a water treatment device, at least a reducing substance and an activated carbon are used as filter mediums and water is passed at first through a reducing substance layer and then through an activated carbon layer. At first, remaining chlorine is chemically reacted thereby in the reducing substance layer to change it into a chlorine compd. being harmless and safe to the human body and to remove it. Then, org. halogen compd. such as agricultural chemicals and trihalomethane, and substances being the origin of the odor of mildew such as 2-methylisoborneol and diosmine are adsorbed in the activated carbon layer to remove them. As the reducing substances, calcium sulfite, L-ascorbic acid, salts of L-ascorbic acid, L-ascorbates etc., are pref. used and as the activated carbon, the shape may be particulate or fibrous.
