Summary:PURPOSE:To easily set characters in a short period of time without being conscious of character codes by reading bar codes showing characters with a bar code reader and setting the characters by converting those data to the character codes. CONSTITUTION:A cash register 10 reads a bar code 1 meaning the character code with a bar code reader 2, dispatches that bar code to a character code conversion program 3 and converts it to a character code. The converted character code is sent to a program 4 for setting and registered as a character. Character bar codes 6 meaning codes corresponding to all the characters, figures or symbols usable for the cash register 10 are described in a bar code sheet 5, and characters shown by the character bar codes 6 are printed under the respective character bar codes 6. The respective character bar codes 6 are arranged while setting the longitudinal intervals and lateral intervals corresponding to the size and performance of the bar code reader so as to eliminate wrong reading.
