Abstract PURPOSE:To provide the optical fiber and its discriminating method which can exactly retrieve facility information on coated optical fiber discrimination, etc., in real time. CONSTITUTION:At plural, e.g. eight places in this case where nearly constant intervals are left lengthwise, cores 10 of optical fibers are expanded at a specific rate to form core expansion storage parts 11a-11e, or left, as they are. Namely, unexpanded parts 12a-12c are formed and when pulsative lights are made incident, the intensity level of backward scattered light which varies large (13a-13e) for the core expansion storage parts 11a-11e and has a little variation (14a-14c) for the unexpanded parts 12a-12c is obtained to store information on core numbers, etc.
