Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain an automatic document feeder whose cost is low and whose functionality is excellent by automatically adjusting the size of a gap between an original cover plate except a carrying means part and an original platen for exposure in the case of carrying in/out a sheet original and in the case of forming an image. CONSTITUTION:As soon as the original is fed, a spring clutch 5 is actuated to half rotate a cam 6. Then, a link 7 is moved in a direction shown by an arrow, the tips of levers 8a and 8b are lowered, an original cover mat 13 is raised, and the space of several millimeters is formed between the mat 13 and a glass. Then, the original 2 is carried in a state where the edge of the fed original is press-contacted by a pressing rollers (press-contact roller) 12a to 12c with the glass. Furthermore, when the leading edge of the original is detected by an original leading edge detecting sensor, a clutch 9 is actuated to stop the carrying of a belt 11, simultaneously, the spring clutch 5 is actuated to half rotate the cam 6, and the levers 8a and 8b, and the lever on an R side are raised, so that the mat 13 is lowered and the original 2 is press-contacted to the glass surface.
