Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain bleached pulp without mutagenicity by applying a nonchlorine-based bleaching chemical after an alkali extraction stage in multistage bleaching of chemical pulp. CONSTITUTION:In multistage bleaching of chemical pulp, a nonchlorine-based bleaching chemical (e.g. hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, peracetic acid, a dithionite, a borohydride, ozone or oxygen) is applied after the alkali extraction stage. The resultant treated pulp is negative to mutagenicity tests.
