PURPOSE:To predict the vicinity of the end of a tape whose length is unknown at the time of performing a search operation and deceleration for the end of the tape without measuring the tape length by traveling the tape at a known speed. CONSTITUTION:In reference to reproducing a magnetic tape 1, where coded main information is recorded on plural tracks while coded auxiliary information is intermittently recorded on one track, a regenerative signal of the track recorded with the auxiliary information is detected in its envelope by an envelope detecting means 8, and a frequency of its detected output signal is measured by an envelope frequency measuring means 9, so that a traveling speed of the magnetic tape is detected. On the other hand, a rotating cycle of a supply side reel 3 is detected by a supply side reel rotating cycle measuring means 6. A resudual amt. of the mangetic tape 1 is calculated by a tape residual amt. calculating means 10 based on an output of the envelope frequency measuring means 9 and an output of the supply side reel rotating cycle measuring means 6, and a take-up side reel 2 is driven in accordance with its residual amt. calculating output.
