Summary:PURPOSE:To provide the process for production of the recording medium which is excellent in durability and mass productivity by applying and forming a protective layer in such a manner that the resin film thickness in the inner peripheral part is larger than the resin film thickness in the outer peripheral part at the time of forming this protective layer. CONSTITUTION:This magneto-optical recording medium is formed by providing a transparent disk-shaped substrate 2 with a magneto-optical recording film 6 and the protective layer 7 consisting of a UV curing resin. The protective layer 7 is formed directly or via other layer on the recording film 6 of the recording medium in such a manner that the resin film thickness in the inner peripheral part of the protective layer is larger than the resin film thickness in the outer peripheral part thereof at this time. UV curing resins having a high thixotropic property are used as the UV curing resin. The UV curing resin liquid is applied on the recording medium while holding the medium in such a manner that its coating surface is recessed to form the protective layer 7 in such a manner that the resin film thickness in the inner peripheral is larger than the resin film thickness in the outer peripheral part at the time of forming the protective layer 7. The magneto-optical recording medium of a magnetic field modulation type having the excellent durability and mass productivity is thereby obtd.
