Summary:PURPOSE:To eliminate troublesome operation for passing a terminal device from one hand to the other at the time of a read of an article code or the input of an order quantity by automatically switching a bar code reader function or pen input function by the bar code pen controller according to a predetermined operation procedure. CONSTITUTION:The pen type input device 11 has the bar code reader function for reading a bar code out on an irradiated surface 34 irradiated by a laser light emission part 31 and the pen input function which produces a magnetic field by supplying a current to a coil 33 provided nearby the tip of a pen and detects the position of the pen type input device 11 from variation of a current generated when an input/output surface 14 is touched. For the input of data, the current is supplied to the coil 33 of the pen type input device 11 and the tip part of the pen type input device is brought into contact with the input/ output surface. The input/output surface 14 detects variation of the magnetic field and detects the input position. A communication controller sends the data inputted by the pen type input device 11 to a host computer.
