CONSTITUTION:A gel-like substrate material for culturing animal cells comprises the type I collagen treated with a reducing agent as a main component, and a method for culturing the animal cells by using a collagen gel produced by gelling the reduced collagen as a substrate material for culture. The substrate material enables the high level function generation and long term existence of animal cells, especially primary cultured cells, and enables to inexpensively and simply provide the substrate material for the culture.
