Summary:PURPOSE:To suppress variation in an optical state small by selecting row electrode subgroups so that specific requirements are satisfied. CONSTITUTION:Selective voltages are applied to row electrodes R1-R4 and a time interval T is a time interval for selecting a row electrode subgroup once when N row electrodes are all divided into row electrode subgroups at every L row electrode. Here, while the specific requirements are satisfied the row electrode subgroups are selected. Namely. (1) L is represented as kNT/tau and determined so that k=20-250, where N is the number of all the row electrodes of the liquid crystal display element, T is the selective time of one row electrode, and T is the mean response time (second) of the liquid crystal display element. (2) Voltages which have a positive or negative amplitude Vr (Vr>0) about an intermediate voltage are applied to the row electrodes when they are selected and the intermediate voltage is applied when not.
