Summary:PURPOSE:To secure oxidation resistance by constituting a stainless steel of a composition containing specific weight percentages of C, Mn, Cr, Ni, Al, Si, S, O, and V and having the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. CONSTITUTION:This austenitic stainless steel forming an oxide film mainly of Al type on the surface in an oxidizing atmosphere of a temp. as high as >=800 deg.C and excellent in oxidation resistance has a composition consisting of, by weight, <=0.15% C, <=2.0% Mn, 15-35% Cr, 20-60% Ni, 2.5-6.0% Al, <=0.15% Si, <=0.0030% S (where S+O is regulated to <=0.0050%), <=0.01% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Further, <=0.2% Ti is incorporated. Moreover, <=0.3% of one or more kinds among rare earth elements and Ca are incorporated. By this method, an oxide film mainly of Al type can be stably formed over a long time.
