Summary:PURPOSE:To provide the subject new derivative, a specific benzoylcyclohexanedione derivative, having excellent herbicidal effect on paddy weeds and field weeds, causing no chemical injury on useful crops, also nontoxic to humans and livestock and fish, thus useful as a herbicide. CONSTITUTION:(A) A cyclohexanedione derivative of formula I (R and R are each H or lower alkyl) (e.g. 1,3-cyclohexanedione) and (B) a benzoyl halide derivative of formula II (X is Cl or Br; Q is lower alkoxyethyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, etc.; Y is halogen) (e.g. 2,4-dibromo-3-propargyloxyethoxybenzoyl chloride) are agitated in the presence of triethylamine in chloroform under ice cooling to carry out reaction for one hour. After the reaction, the chloroform layer is taken and the solvent is distilled off; the residues are dissolved in 1,2- dichloroethane, and triethylamine and acetonecyanohydrin are added to the resultant solution followed by treatment at 40 deg.C for one hour, thus affording the objective derivative of formula III useful as e.g. a herbicide.
