PURPOSE:To provide a device by which the cleaning of the surface of an article is efficiently executable, particularly, the device by which the descaling of a metallic material is swiftly and effectively executable and a method in which the descaling of steel is executed by using the same. CONSTITUTION:(1). This is a brush roll having a rotary shaft 2 having a gas feeding path 3 at the inside, a brush 1 fitted to the outer circumference of its one end, a gas jetting port 4 branched from the gas feeding path and opening at the fitting base part of the brush, a mechanism moving the rotary shaft in the horizontal and vertical directions and a mechanism rotating the rotary shaft. 2. An operation in which the brush 1 is put on the surface of a metallic material while the rotary shaft 2 of the brush roll is rotated and the jet of gas from the gas jetting port 4 are jointly executed. By the effects of the rotation of the brush and the jet of the gas, the efficiency of the cleaning of the surface is made high. Particularly, even in the case hot steel is subjected to descaling, the gas cools the brush, by which the wear of the brush is reduced.
