Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a compact bar code reader having high performance and capable of extremely reducing the cost of materials and assembling. CONSTITUTION:The bar code reader 1 is constituted so that light emitted from a light emitting element 3 is convergently projected in the vicinity of a bar code 10 through a lens 7 and light reflected from the bar code 10 is allowed to form an image in the vicinity of a light receiving element 8 through the lens 7. The element 8 is arranged on the optical axis 22 of the lens 7 and the element 3 is arranged in the vicinity of the element 8. An optical fiber 23 for quiding light emitted from the element 3 to the optical axis 22 is arranged immediately in front of the element 3. The end surface 24 of the fiber 23 on the optical axis 22 is arranged at the position that light emitted from the end surface 24 is converged in the vicinity of the bar code 10 through the lens 7.
