Abstract PURPOSE:To provide a new compound having excellent inhibiting action on elastase originated from human leukocyte and, accordingly, useful as an elastase- inhibition agent for the treatment or prevention of pulmonary emphysema, respiratory distress syndrome and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and bronchitis. CONSTITUTION:The new compound of formula I or II (R is benzylcarbonyl or isovaleryl; R and R are OH or together form carbonyl oxygen), e.g. Q17897-A of formula III. It has a molecular weight of 934 and molecular formula of C46H62N8O13. It can be produced by culturing a microbial strain belonging to Flexibacter and capable of producing the compound of formula I or formula II [e.g. new Flexibacter sp.Q17897 (FERM P-13305)] and subjecting the cultured product to conventional extraction, separation and purification processes. The cultivation is preferably carried out under aeration and agitation at 27 deg.C and pH 6-8.
